Btw, @Pale Rider my previous flat was a "cottage flat": 4 in a block with each a main door, the English insurance people never understood what I was talking about

I park my car in my back yard, it's enclosed, the walls are about 8ft high, but it has no roof.

My phrase 'enclosed rear yard' baffles car insurance companies.

They either have 'on street' (definitely not) or 'garaged' (not really).

Perhaps I'm being picky, but if the car is, say, damaged in a hail storm, I don't want the insurance company to be able to wriggle out of paying because I told them the car was kept under cover.

That would come under "on the drive way" which is what my policy states.

My younger son had a whole terraced house done by SafeStyle. Very efficiently done and no hassle other than the long-winded palaver with the sales man. The Everest guy on the other hand was a pain in the you know where! Plus he had the worst case of halitosis I've ever encountered.

Barnet,
I used a local company, a family firm, for our new front door and windows. They were courteous, throughout, no hard selling or bullying, from the time the rep came around to the arrangements for fitting. They did a really good job and the after sales service for some slight adjustments was first class, even coming out on a Christmas eve for a minor problem.
They may not of been the cheapest, but they are the best.
They go by the name of Barnet windows unsurprisingly.

composite is the way to go.

we used Crystal in Romford . standard fare for getting a sensible price, but when the guy came round I told him how much they cost the builder I was working for per unit fitted so i wanted it at about that price and none of the haggling boolox. He met the price i had in mind and I have been happy with it . £750 fitted

I do wonder what the world has come to, when a front door costs as much as a month's mortgage!
Or 3-4x my monthly payment
