They look neat, do they work?

They discourage the opportunists. I don't often use anything else and my bike sits outside my house most nights. Having said that it's a fairly crappy commuter - I wouldn't let anything fancy out of my sight.

but Amsterdam is not typical of the whole nation.

These locks are also referred to as Nurses locks, here is a write up with pros and cons, only you can decide.

I notice from the live feed that drivers and peds seem to treat that zebra crossing differently from how we would in the UK - if there's peds standing on the edge of the crossing, waiting to cross, they seem to wait until the traffic has passed before stepping out. (like the traffic has priority?) In this country (where I live at least) it's a cardinal sin to drive over a crossing with a ped on it! It will get you shouted at! Perhaps the law is different in the Netherlands?

My dad's theory is that the zebra crossings in France are to keep knocked-over pedestrians in one place so it's easier for the ambulances to find them.

I see some seasonal changes, they have taken away the pissoir and put up a christmas tree across the tramway. Also a new decorated market stall has appeared.
The pissoir was only there at weekends but hasn't been there for a while. The christmas tree blew down on Saturday!

Some different urban chaos at this webcam.
Best on a weekend when all the tourists are trying to get their photos taken on it.

Fab! I used to drive through it every day, years ago, on the way to the bottom of the M1. There were always giggling tourists with their cameras, even then. It's a great idea to set up webcam there.

Well they are already in the festive season. A little stall at the bottom, must be serving hot drinks. Or a grotto.

Plenty of cyclists there. Wonder if any on here go through it?

I am going to watch that late tonight to see if I can catch any speeders.

My sister lives just around the corner from that crossing and says the tourists can be a real pain slowing up traffic while they take their photos. (Shame eh?!)
