I’m going to Montana for a month in August for a fly fishing trip.

I notice that this will cost me £1/min for outgoing, incoming and texts with my mobile provider - but I don’t really want to change as I’m happy with the UK charges.

My question is...

I have an unlocked iPhone 5. Will I be able to buy a pre-paid sim when I get there that will work in my phone? I know I’ll have a different number but this is not a problem, I primarily want to use it for booking accommodation a few days in advance and maintaining contact with my fishing friend if we are fishing different areas.

If so, does anyone have any idea of the cost of pre-paid sims over there?

Thanks in advance.

It will work. Price, I can't advise I'm afraid.

Just been Googling cell coverage for Montana.

It seems that Verizon is about the only viable option if you want decent coverage. Montana isn’t exactly high population density where we’re going so I kind of expect coverage to be flakey.

We have a couple of days allocated to getting our shoot together when we arrive in Missoula, so will probably pop into a local cell phone shop to get it sorted.

If there's anyone back home you'd like to stay in touch with, it's worth getting 'both ends' on facebook - the messenger app that comes with it is excellent for doing 'skype' type calls (using wifi) - we have half hour face to face conversations with our daughter in nz, with great sound & vision and hardly any lag, and it all costs nothing.

I seem to recall payg SIMs being v expensive in the US, from memory £50+ just for the SIM. US mobile contracts are far more than here $50 a month for a super basic package and phone. Do some Googling first

Have a lovely trip tho
A month's fly fishing in Montana sounds pretty lush!
Mmmmm.. it is.

Last visited about five years ago and have been looking forward to going back ever since.

Here are a couple of pics from the last trip...

Looks like getting a 3 payg and paying the monthly roaming fee is the cheapest

US SIMs only of benefit if calling texting within US

Or just use a WiFi based messaging platform assuming access to WiFi

Very smart. Probably better than a local SIM as you can roam between networks there. Use the tesco international dialling app (or similar) with your data for USA calls at 1/2p per minute and free texts, and the actual phone to call the UK.

Never mind the phone, you are going to need very small hooks to catch flies.
I find a rolled up copy of Cycling Weekly very effective.

Cheapest and easist option may be to drop into a local Walmart and get a prepaid phone and plan. Maybe $30 for the phone and $30 for the plan.
