Perhaps your battery is wearing out?
No, it's practically brand new lol

Perhaps it was more like 8 hours use before I got the low battery indicator, either way I wasn't confident it would last 12 hours

Entirely possible that it gave you the warning when there was plenty of charge left- with my 705, I've had the warning when I was four or more hours from finishing a 200k and it lasted the course and ride home (just). Certainly not good for the nerves though....

Interesting. Yes definitely not great for the nerves when you are miles from home! I might test it out next weekend safe in the knowledge I have the backup charger ready to jump in.

stump66 - how long does that take to charge itself (from mains) and assuming it'll charge smart phones and garmins.
StuAff - how does the portapow hold up?
I'm doing LEJOG, mainly camping and need something to recharge my garmin 200 and samsung galaxy s3. PLan would be to recharge via wall when in hotels/pubs, but there will be nights (sometimes consecutive) where i'll need to charge both phone and garmin overnight.
any help/other suggestions would be great.
P.S. i'm not too fussed about charging whilst using the garmin, just on stops/overnight.
Cheers

So far, so good- had the 3xAA one since September, with 2700 mAh batteries it can charge the 705 from flat to full & has juice to spare. An S3 would almost certainly need more than one set of batteries for a full charge- maybe 70-80% full with fresh batteries. I'll assume you don't want to take an AA charger along as well or buy Duracells (etc) on the road, so I would suggest either a bigger battery pack with USB/mains charging such as stumpy's, and/or parsimonious usage of the phone.

Depends on the capacity, i got a 12000mha and i think it takes about 8hrs to charge and comes with various charging tips to fit different devices, i charge my phone and gps from it, lasts all week one charge

Like stumpy66 I bought a high capacity pack. It's nominally 10,000 mAh but that's the rated capacity of its internal batteries. The actual capacity at the 5v outputs measures about 5500 mAH at 1A. (Tested into a 5 ohm resistor not a dynamic load)

That's fine for 5 recharges of my Samsung s7500 phone, giving me a total of 18 hours run time with the bike software app I'm using.

From my own experience I'd back up those above who've suggested this approach.

My pack takes over 12 hours to fully recharge from flat, using a high current USB charger which can meet the 2A maximum current that can be handled by the pack's charger. If I plug in a 1A USB charger it takes nearer 18 hours. This could be an issue for anyone touring.

thanks for all the info (including several technical terms which leave me clueless ). I may actually be best having both types; the usb one charged and ready for everyday recharges and top ups in hotels and the portapow for those "stuck in the middle of nowhere" moments with a few packs of spare batteries.
Thanks again.

Im Gonna jump in and hijack this thread IIMBSB (my apologies Wheres-My-Beard?). But since some of of you know about the Edge 200 I thought it the place to ask some silly questions regarding screen icons on the device (there is bugger all in the manual). When riding a course what does the shaded sort of arrow in the left of the screen mean/do? And the number at the top of the screen (usually when I glance down at it it says 300) what does that represent? Other than that I have found the gadget to be great so far.

is this the arrow that keeps moving? If so, it's where North is - like a compass. as for the number, not sure - is it time/distance 'til next turn? only used course feature once so far, but planning on using it Sunday so will let you know if i find out. Agreed, great gadget.
