Used Furniture............I can't even give it away !!

Had a big change in lounge/diner.......
old stone fireplace taken out & new Adams type fitted. That meant new carpet (40 mtrs). We also decided on new furniture which meant getting rid of the old e.g. mahogany dining table with 6 chairs & matching bureau, 3 x Mahogany corner units, 3 piece suite.
We asked every one we knew or met..........no one wanted any of it (offering it free!!)
2nd hand furniture shops.........if it's not a well know make they are not interested.
Heart foundation........they took the suite & one corner unit........wouldn't take the taller ones as "they don't sell"
Gave the old (good nick) carpet to a recently separated guy I know.
Managed to give the table & chairs to someone who has just started a business in "shabby chic" stuff..
I kid you not.....getting rid of the old stuff FOR FREE was harder than choosing the new stuff.
Last bits.......the 2 corner units plus bureau went today.........to a relative who wanted them for storage in his garage

Wow. When I have moved home, I've rarely taken furniture as it's generally been dogged to death. I would have snapped your hand off for furniture! After moving, we trawl gumtree and whatnot for bargains. If I move again, I'm taking sofa and beds with me this time. I've landed myself really comfy ones at the mo

We had two lovely pieces of furniture to give away and were let down by several people on freecycle and a charity who specialise in renovations, who arranged a pickup and didn't even bother phoning to cancel.

So after judicious use of a hammer and a saw, off to the tip they went. It's rather sad, you literally can't give stuff away.

Thats right. Ours had the labels so they took them.

We bought two new sofas for the living room, so had a good quality 5-year old three piece suite to dispose of.

After ringing 3 charities, we found one who agreed to take it. On the agreed date (with the new furniture due imminently) they turned up and the bloke in change got out of the van sucking his teeth before he'd even opened the gate and refused point blank to take it.

"yes we have, but firstly no-one asked when I offered to donate it and secondly I've hoovered the furniture so it's all ready to go"
"you might have missed something"
"i'm fairly sure we haven't"
"we can't take it - some people have allergies"
"perhaps you could ask and give it to someone who doesn't have an allergy - or maybe already has a dog of their own?"
"no, i'm not taking it"
"Why not?"
"you've got a dog"
"if having a dog is such an issue, why didn't your office mention it when we offered to donate it? you're just making excuses now aren't you?"
"you have a dog so we can't take it"

Cue two hours ringing other charities, etc none of whom were interested / could collect it before the new furniture was due to be delivered.
Eventually had no option but to dispose of it by ringing the council who presumably disposed of it to land fill.
Will never deal with that particular charity again, who still regularly bleat on in the local media about struggling to find furniture for people...

The upside is that as a consequence we've found a local branch of another national charity who (although they couldn't take the furniture on that occasion due to timescales), have since been happy to take several other items and make good use of them.

It's madness isn't it. We've offered it to my niece, who is going to rent a house soon, but they have said they don't know how much space they will have.

People with wood burning stoves are usually pleased to accept old furniture if you saw it up into manageable pieces and deliver it.
Just last week I came across a heavy round hardwood table and chairs in a layby. I returned in my car loaded it in and took it all home for dismantling and sawing up before offering it to a grateful disabled guy.

we needed to ditch a working washing machine and tumble dryer as we'd not realised the previous owners were leaving them behind. Tried to give away ti charity, but there were hoops to go through (wouldn't pick them up from outside - we had to be in - why?) so we ended up paying the council to dump em which is a waste and a shame. Maybe I could have used fleabay with 99p start - or maybe a £10 buy it now refundable on pick up. Tok late, gone now
