Bottle dynamo??? No thanks!
Should be sent to prison for wearing sandals on a bike, or in fact just for wearing sandals with 3/4 length trousers in the first place..

Just a thought but I suspect that MTBs have brought more people back to cycling than many realise. They were 'cool' they had low gears [sorry but the old 3 speed and five speed jobs just didn't cut the mustard for non dedicated folk and most just moved on to m/cycles or cars ASAP]. Dutch style jobs were heavy uncool and looked like something granny would use. I see very few suited types using bikes most wear either shorts or at least some form of 'cycle wear' and change if they have to. Cycling is not a purely utilitarian exercise it is about fun too
Praise the cheap MTB it brought thousands back to the fold [including me] and without it I believe cycling would almost almost dead and buried by now

Well...I "kind of" agree
Dispensing with the ASDA level of BSO's with parts made from Wensleydale cheese; Dunlop, Magna, Flite etc..

I did many a mile in the early 90s on my Raleigh Mustang which was heavy but affordable, functional, and gradually updated from a steel wheeled 18 speed MTB to an alloy wheeled 21 speed "tourer" with drops, front & rear panniers etc..

But then the really nasty bikes came along, the type of bikes that would put anybody off cycling as it squeaks and bounces along, chain clattering as the "Golden Wing" derailleur wobbles up and down the sprockets, freewheel wobbling around on a bent spindle made from a metal like substance as strong as threaded liquorice
