Some interesting comments – all welcomed – I did post that clip up for educational purposes.

Mr P – with respect, I think you’re a little off target – understandable as you weren’t there – but in answer to some of your points here goes:

She might have had priority because of the parked cars – but I think as others have commented, I was well into the manoeuvre before she appeared – if I was driving, like you, and I guess most other people, I’d have waited for the oncoming vehicle that had nowhere to go - not just aimed at them.

She was approaching, in my opinion, too fast, and showed no signs of slowing. I believed she was going to attempt to pass me fast and close. I had 2 choices and not a lot of time to make a decision.

1 – move over to the left/jump out of the way so I was touching the parked vehicles, allowing the car to try and pass me at speed: as I thought I had made clear in the video, I really didn’t think there would have been sufficient space for a safe pass – I think if I had moved to the left she would have carried on at 30mph and possibly clipped my bars or crushed me. (And as it turned out, there wasn’t enough space.) BTW by the time I stopped my left bar was about a foot from the parked cars – so it wouldn’t have given her much more room anyway.

2 - keep the road position and “force” her to see me/slow down – which I did - and which worked – and is exactly what I would do again and again if a similar situation happens in the future.

Once I had stopped I didn’t move at first because I still thought she might actually stop - not just carry on and force past when there obviously wasn’t enough room. I then didn’t move as she began to pass, not out of stubbornness, as you suggest, but because she was pulling faces and mouthing, amongst other things, that there was plenty of room – I was looking at her, trying to establish eye contact and work out what she was going on about – had she asked me to drag my bike the 12 inches that I could to the left, I would of done so, but she didn’t and, as I said, she was going on about there being plenty of room.

I don’t think I did anything wrong there – and still don’t. As I put at the beginning of the clip I think the driver either misjudged the space, or thought it’s only a cyclist… they were also approaching too quickly... either way their fault….

TC, I don't think you did anything wrong there either. You were absolutely right in taking option 1 to slow her down and thus reduce any consequences for you both.

If property has been damaged, then the incident must be reported by the driver, AFAIK.

Send the tape to the owner of the fence and the police.

TC,

Out of interest has the right hander beyond the LA and past the width restriction, ever caught you out?

It's claimed me twice in once in dry and once in wet conditions. I now take it very gingerly round there. I think it could be something to do with the camber in the road.

As for the vid, I've often got squeezed there in both directions when I had right of way. Being a bit of a rat run, motorists tend to be a bit impatient.

Joebe – I probably cycle along there 2 or 3 times per year – it’s not part of my usual commute – and only drive it when taking the children to Sion Park/Snakes & Ladders – so I’m not that familiar with it, but it is a real rat run… does the tide flood the road there? I always find the cobbles outside The White Cross, on the Richmond side, are fun to negotiate just after a high tide…

On rare occasions the river will flood the road, but not as often as further south at Richmond lock (the cause of my spill last week).

Lots of cyclists use the road as they can get through Syon Park onto the London Road at the the Brentford sorting office. I have to say I'm surprised there hasn't been a major accident there yet.

It never ceases to amaze me the number of times I was overtaken on the righthander just after the entrance to Syon Park, even though I was in primary to stop this happening and happily barrelling along at 20mph. It's a completely blind corner because of the 9' wall and lack of pavement on the inside, but cars would still pull out to overtake, leaving you thinking "if they meet another car now they're just going to swerve left and wipe me out"

Can't see anything that you did wrong here big T.

I had a similarish experience about a year ago which forced me on to the pavement. I think there's a kind of blindness to these incidents where the driver thinks - "If I ignore him/her, then they don't really exist".

To be fair MrPig, I can see where you are coming from. We have to be seen as pro-bike, but not anti-car. That is certainly my stance and I am sure it is TC's stance. I actual quite enjoy driving when the roads are running freely. One of my best holidays ever was a driving holiday in the north of Scotland and across to Skye. The driving was sublime!

Looking at that video one more time (plenty of views TC!) the car doesn't stop at all. TC certainly did the right thing here.

The driver is completely nuts. Yes, it would have been nice if TC had slipped into the empty parking space on the left as the car came into sight, but doing at least several hundred quid's worth of damage rather than wait five seconds??

Yes, I agree, and having looked at the video many times and listening to your version of events I think that I was too harsh on you. Your account sounds pretty reasonable. I'd say you're only failing was not seeing the car early enough to give way, you don't ride one of those 'mobile speedbump' recumbents do you? ;0)

Oh, me too! What cars were invented for.

Spot on Manatom – I enjoy driving & cycling and would certainly say I was pro-bike rather than anti-car. There are idiots on all forms of transport – but it just so happens that the numpties on bicycles cause me far less stress and anxiety when I’m driving than do the numpties in cars when I’m the one on the bike. And I guess that’s the same for most people on the forum – which is probably why we sometimes sound like we’re moaning about everyone with a motor…
