Just a passing comment in case it's relevant, but the bloke in the local Post Office suggested that I was wasting my money insuring (for postage) an item I sold on E Bay, for the actual selling price I received. He said that the PO wont accept an E Bay invoice as a valid evidence of "real value". He was too busy for me to find out what they would accept.

This question is useless without the context as there is surely one.

Did the OP win a pile of junk at auction?

One person's junk is another's treasure.

Why does the context of the question have to be questioned. A pile of junk, won at an auction, would be worth What I'd paid for it. Reason being, that is what I felt it was worth, whatever the amount. And I do go to quite a few auctions.

However for those that want a fuller story , for them to comment on, read on.
Item in question is/was a printhead, won on ebay. I have given the cost, to myself, as the value of the item. Others are saying its worth more. I paid what I thought it was worth. Seen during the week at just under £100. I paid a lot less than that.

This doesn't sit well when it comes to official form filling, as I'm finding out. "It must be worth more than what I paid, so please enter the actual value of the item."

As far as what the PO will accept as proof of value, they won't accept a shop receipt as proof.
