I think it is a fallacy that the van driver was prepared to listen and reflect on my road position or his driving conduct, in his mind all cyclists are children hence his reference to 'adult conversation'. He was incredibly rude and imposing with his vehicle even before he opened his mouth. Sure this made me notably irate however it's far better that any 'education' comes from the Metropolitan Police than from me.

The driver decided to undertake. Claiming it was the cyclist fault the driver acted like that is, well, retarded.
That is modern cycle craft for you.

beano, that driver's got the IQ of a ham sandwich, he didn't want a discussion at all:

"Why ride in the middle of the road?"

"It's called Prim.."

"No it's not!"

Look at the slack-jawed yokel, if he wasn't driving like a brain-damaged monkey he'd be pointing at aeroplanes.
That's not how the conversation really went is it?
Yep. Starts at 21 seconds, watch it again.

And that's when the neanderthal interrupts. If he genuinely wanted a discussion he'd let the other person speak. Economic roadkill can be mildly amusing on Jeremy Kyle, they're pretty scary behind the wheel because they're clueless.

Are you actually working on the presumption that the driver understands what Primary position is?

Although I admire your optimism I don't think there was much scope for improvement with this chap.

He's not for turning. His driving & inability to listen confirmed his prejudice. His resort to physical threats confirmed it.

Why did you start calling him a f@cking idiot and shouting at him to move his van?

Because he practically pulled up on top of me in the ASZ.

I could perhaps understand that if it had been your primary reaction but you were calm for about 20 seconds then lost the plot. I don't see the point in starting a conversation with the guy if you're not going to try to make it productive.

The OP did initially attempt a constructive debate, but quickly realised that the driver was not interested in the Socratic method...

First came his driving which I reacted to in a friendly manner, then came a question about lane position but he wasn't interested in an honest answer.
To top it off he then collectively pronounces car and van drivers as considerate road users while about to give me an earful.

You have more patience than I because by this stage mine is spent. So I'm having a go.

Hi veloevol, I think your positioning was fine but you missed a great opportunity there to have a reasonable discussion with the driver. I don't understand why you suddenly started shouting and swearing at him unless it was because the lights had gone to green and you wanted to make some sort of impression on him before he had to move off.

I've been asked the same question in similar circumstances, however I try to educate not alienate.

GC

It's clear to me that the driver wasn't expecting a proper answer, which the OP did try to give in a fairly reasonable tone but was cut off by the driver immediately becoming argumentative.
I've been in a similar position, also with a van driver, who asked me why I was in the middle of the road. When I started to answer he realised he was wrong so became abusive.

As far as I can see the OP fought fire with fire. The driver is a twat.
