With all the electronics in new cars these days , its a shame the emissions cant be based on what the CAR ACTUALLY puts out and measured over a period of actual driving .

I thought we didn't call it road tax?

Under the glorious Reich of the Farquhar administration it shall be called road tax. Partly because that's what most people call it anyway, partly because it'll be a tax drivers pay to use their vehicles on a road (particularly with the annual mileage escalator), and partly because my Government won't indulge in needless pedantry.

My idea of VED being part of the fuel cost would sort of do this, and encourage people to drive more economically.

The VAG thing really annoys me. They chose to break the law, in a way that affects the health and life of basically everyone on the planet, and yet somehow the compensation bill hasn't destroyed the company.

Have they even fixed the cars yet?

A remapped VW diesel is still good on fuel but will spew tonnes of soot, so adding it to fuel kind of works but won't cut the crap

Considering how filthily polluting they are, its a disgrace that diesels are subject to such rudimentary emissions checks during the MOT.
I agree. On the plus point my car only did just over 2,700 miles last year. Much less than I cycled.

I like your idea as it is a type of pay-per-usage concept. Problem is. VW cars owners will score since their cars defeat the MOT test method. But tell me, do MOT tests test for NOx or just CO2?
They don't test either.
The sinister bit is after market remapping adblue dpf removal (google it, plenty companies offering the service) There is a trade off between producing CO2 and NOx and manafactures have to increase CO2 (fuel consumption) in a bid to reduce NOx. Huge savings to be made to disabling all the enviromental stuff on modern diesels. - Do the sums, 8mpg to 9mpg on 70,000 miles a year (£4000 a year?) Does anyone really think the muckaway boys (skips and tippers) operating on a shoestring have not considered this ?

But, the bit that nobody likes to consider - air travel! emissions have nearly doubled in the last 20 years and are expected to double again in the the next 20 years - hang your heads in shame if you're flying off on holiday this year. And it is not just the massive pollution levels around airports (lets have another runway at Heathrow) The climate change affect they are having when flying at altitude is just obscene.
You can buy an AdBlue emulation/defeat device on AliExpress for £20.
