Vehicle insurance in New Zealand

    My youngest son has just phoned from New Zealand to say that he's hired a camper van and that there's no compulsory third party insurance. When I picked myself up from the floor, I remembered something from university days about New Zealand having a no fault state insurance system funded by levies and general taxation.

    Does this mean that there's really no need for motor insurance in New Zealand save for vehicle damage?

    An old housemate who's parents are now NZ citizens said the same thing. I don't know of the other things he said whether they are true are not but it sounded like they do everything differently, some good, some bad...
