Vertical Bicycle Rack

Just another negative :-( I was on a train once with vertical racks and when a young student refused to put his bike upright the guard threw him off the train :-( His protestation that he couldn't afford needing to have his hydraulic brakes drained as a result, fell on deaf ears despite this being the last train on a Sunday night on a branch line, with only me two girls (seated at the far end of the carriage) and guard on board :-( The guard did throw him off on the main line but that wouldn't have been much consolation.

Perhaps you could point the sub-contractor to the following document (by TfL) http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/businessandpartners/Workplace-Cycle-Parking-Guide.pdf . It lists that type of rack as "Not recommended except as a last resort'!

At my place of work we have a mixture of sheffield stands and they type of stands you seem to have (only difference appears to be that the front wheel sits in a frame and that is where you 'lock' your bike to). The problems I've found with that type are:

  • You are generally only able to lock your wheel to the rack
  • Each space is too close together, resulting in handlebars of the lower bike going thru the spokes of the higher bike.
  • Good luck if you have full mudguards fitted as these foul against the rack and will eventually buckle.
Due to the above, I just get into work early to make sure I get a space at the sheffield stands.

Thanks for that pdf, I have forwarded to the site committee who made the decision about our new rack.
