Quite right he is about camping. My son is a bit older (almost 11 then), and we did a 10 day ride from Aachen to Luxemburg last year - camping. Camping saves money, and is far more fun if you have decent gear. Decent gear for two (tent, mattresses, sleeping bags and stove plus pots) only weighs some 6 kg. On our trip my son had front rollers on the back like your son, and I had front and back panniers. We were still using much of our older bulkier gear that we have since replaced. I am confident we could now do it with just rear panniers for me (tent on top of the rack), plus his front rollers on the back of his bike. Anyway, junior loved it. Sometimes he had to walk the very steep hills, but sometimes he beat me, and benignly enquired if I was coping. Getting lost together, having together made the wrong decision, and then having to deal with another big climb as a consequence, it was all excellent for bonding. More people should do this.

And he carted his own luggage the whole way in a pair of Ortlieb front rollers on his Islabike Beinn 24, and coped heroically with 28 miles of truly dreadful weather yesterday all the way from Hawes through Garsdale and Sedbergh down to Kirkby Lonsdale.

Excellent work.

Chapeau to you both! He sounds like an intrepid lad. And you're a top Mum for giving him that sort of opportunity!

Perhaps we need a Touring (Junior) section, so that all the next generation can plot holidays together, and then bring parents along. ;)

Cant agree with that sentiment enough. Well done to both of you. What a fantastic thing to do with your kids.

It was a really great experience for him. The third day, from Hawes to Kirkby Lonsdale in frankly brutal weather, was a real challenge and we very very nearly packed at Garsdale. But he made it - and to say that he never encounters hills, given that we do all our riding in the remarkably pancake-like Vale of York, did remarkably well on proper hills. Full ride reports from him on his blog at http://zakonnabike.edublogs.org/

Excellent report! There's something so honest and no nonsense about a child's account of things. What they ate, what they did, what the weather was like. It's all you need to know!

I think I cycle past his school most mornings, by the way...

I can't wait to take my nephews on trips like that. At three, and six months, I've a while to wait.

Fantastic effort, love the blog.

Well done to both of you but especially the King of the Mountains.

That is some serious hill riding for a little'un.

Good for both of you - a great adventure.

Wish I had known how to blog when we did our ride.

my stepson is 11 next year and we are going to move him to his third Islabike. Some touring would be great!

ooh, ooh, what're y'getting? What're y'getting? Will it be RED?
(CrinklyCub has fallen in love with a shiny red Luath. But isn't allowed one until he's outgrown the current bike and has long enough legs for 26" wheels!)

Two seat trailer on the back of the trike?

I'm just waiting for the littl'un (currently three) to be big enough to come along too. THen I'll be towing a taglong over the stupid hills....

Just my little one. The boys could sleep in the trailer.... ;)

That would be a fun holiday wouldn't it. Strapped 24/7 into a small trailer with your brother, while Auntie Sue puffs and pants up ahead, cursing at hills....

Sounds brilliant - I would like to do that with mine but somehow every cycling trip this summer has ended up being cut short as they haven't had the enthusiasm for it. But I avidly read all these accounts and hope that one day I will be writing it instead.
