I've never seen a vet riding a bike.

I ride a bike! (and not a super expensive one either!) My views on people moaning about vets bills can be found elsewhere - I haven't had enough wine to bite tonight! :-)

Moggy physio sounds like waste of money to me though - in general cats do great on 3 legs!

Vets bills are turning out to be the new helmet debate!

I paid around £1,200 when my dog was hit by a car, she had two nights at the vets around 20 ish stitches and a leg/hip bound & in plaster!

I just had a back op, about 10 stictches 2 nights in hospital and the cost of the op (if done privately) is around £15k....

I may go to the vets myself next time!

We pay around £30 a month for heart tabs for one of our dogs. Not unreasonable wethinks.

You never HAVE to pay "big" vets bills - euthanasia is always a treatment option if you're that way inclined

Vets are much cheaper here in Spain.

Going back to before we moved here (10 years ago) our dog at the time had to have eye drops, £25 consultation + £13 for the eye drops.

3 years ago the same dog had to have a small cyst removed by lazer from her eyelid. She had to have eyedrops, guess what, yep, the same ones as was prescribed in the UK. However we are able to purchase most stuff for the dogs from the famacia, the eyedrops €1.5.

It is a real rip-off in the UK.

They are also not as well trained, less well equipped and therefore have smaller overheads than we do.

With regard to drug costs unfortunately in the uk we are bound by the cascade system which means that by law we often have to prescribe more expensive "animal" versions of cheaper human drugs if a pharmaceutical company has bothered to (make) rebrand it. We also have to buy our drugs in small quantities which make them more expensive. Also in the 10 years you mentioned it is quite possible the patent ran out on the eye drops so they became cheaper to buy.

To put things in perspective, Aviva train drivers are striking over earning 39k, most of us vets earn a fair bit less than that for a much longer week with overnight and weekend on call duties
