Increasingly common to find a minidisplayport (aka thunderbolt on a mac) as the only display out on contemportary lappies. Needs an adaptor cable. I got one off @m@z0n that does minidisplayport to all three common video standards for my Surface Pro 4. My Lenovo laptop has VGA and HDMI out but struggles to drive a TV at full res on the HDMI.

my next question was going to be if it was a macbook air or something. I also have similar on my lappy... the HDMI out to my monitor looked like a gif, whilst the VGA output was perfect.
