Wondering if anyone has done this ride and could advise on tackling it. Is it best to start at Trieste and go north or vice versa. I'm thinking about doing it next year in conjunction with a couple of weeks cycling along the Danube. Are there campsites along it? What amount of climbing does it involve.
Many thanks.

The traditional, authentic route runs from Donauworth in Germany (on the Romantische Strasse) to Ostiglia, near mantova in Italy.
The newer version branches off at Trento and finishes near Venice.
As part of a longer trip, I did Donauworth to near Mantova, some years back. It's a great route both in Germany and Italy. North to south involves crossing the border over the Reschen Pass and coasting down the other side through Bolzano, Trento and Verona for a few days.
Campsites were easy to find all the way.
