Those of you who have marvelled at my mid-80s Lekeitialde Mondrian a-go-go shirt might not be remotely interested to know that the shorts that went with the shirt turned up the other day.
I was having a bit of a loft clear-out. Tub tape, and a whole lot of tubs, a couple of water bottles (not good), and a pair of shorts with real chamois leather inside. Better yet, wet-look. Oh, yes, Duran Duran have got a lot to answer for! Or was that Olivia Newton-John.
The question is (or was...) could I get in to them? Would 25 years have thickened the DZ waist to such a degree that the shorts would simply be re-incarnated as shiny shorts dust the instant I tried to put them on?
Well, there was bit of pulling, a bit of squeezing, and some frantic re-arranging, but, yes, the DZ backside was eventually encased in mirror-surfaced lycra. And, taking my life and modesty in my hands, the shorts survived a bit of a pootle round London town. You may have heard the AA Roadwatch reports of Islington drivers screeching to a halt with steam coming from their eyeballs.
Alas - the shorts are no more. One wash and the chamois disintegrated. Momento Mori, Shinyshorts. Now where's that unstructured jacket that used to have it's sleeves rolled up?
So - what is the most 'vintage' bit of clothing, cycling or otherwise, in your wardrobe. And can you still get in to it? I'd ask for pics, but this is a family forum....
