Concord was another you couldn't mistake. Or indeed the Chinook helicopter. Heard one very early one morning, very unmistakable thud thud thud, but quiet. Looked up for a while and could just see a dot high up, must have been flying at top end of the operating height, not exactly covert are they.

Eee bring back aircraft before noise regulations.
....

I was out on a bike ride on 11th August and saw it. Not sure how as it was supposed to be putting in an appearance in Eastbourne which is some way away. But as you say unmistakable so perhaps a loop round the south coast and home. As described, very slow and low.

Chinooks are around here almost every day. Mainly low level day flights but sometimes at night. Windows rattle every time. Sometimes the rotors are out of sync and it is a sort or double thud like a heartbeat, then sometimes the thuds are in time and they are extra loud and you can feel it thump in the furniture.

They tested out the re-manufactured ones (that had the wrong computer in them) after they were rebuilt and one had to do an emergency landing about 100 yards from my house in the field next to us. It was there for a day while they fixed a burst pipe.

I love to see them but we do get people moan about the Chinooks.

I've heard that one of the men instrumental in getting it in the air again lives in your area (well, Hampshire), and if they are ever in the area*, they buzz his house. My sister and family saw it over Alresford one day when they were at the steam railway. Oli was about 3, and simply pointed and said "Rocket!"

*For a plane designed to fly to the other side of Russia, 'in the area' is relative....

The red arrows went over Bolton today on their way to the Southport air show, it was great to see all seven together again.

Dammit, we were going through Bolton today, obviously not at the right time...

(Do you mean 'all nine' They came over York, low, about 6 weeks ago, and I'm sure they were nine then, it was the day before the Olympic Opening...)

I was talking about Bentwaters with my father in law last night and remembered (perhaps incorrectly) that if one of the American planes broke the sound barrier and caused a shock wave they used to print an apology in the local paper!

Normally nine yes but for 2012 they are flying with seven but they flew with five as a tribute to the lost pilots recently.

Ah, that will be the ones who flew over the Cheshire Plain at 400 feet yesterday. Right over my head - couldn't hear myself think.

The Vulcan was on it's way to the Victory show just south of Leicester yesterday. Did a short display including use of the after burners^_^

Caroline Grace in the her Spit was better, though..............

They fly 7 ship for displays this year, and 9 for flypasts (like this afternoon). The reason they are a 7 this year is not just because of the lost pilots last year, but because their female pilot grounded herself toward the end of the training season and it was too late to reintegrate any of last years reposted crew.

Am I right that the Vulcan has an hours-flown fatigue limitation on the airframe - once that's reached, no more flying however much money they raise? Does anyone know how close that limit is?

the entire V bomber force did indeed have fatigue limits on the airframes, they were originally developed for a high level bombing role, however they switched to low level flight part way though their service which causes more stress on the structure of the plane.

the Valiant was the first of the three to break up in flight, breaking the main spar of the wing, due to fatigue, at which point they put a fatigue limit on them.
