What is the forum's opinion on waistcoats?

I used to wear one every day at work, unfortunately they only really suit a slim chap. I used to be a slim chap, not so much now.

For fat people and skinny people. For some reason people in between don't wear them.

It depends on what the waistcoat looks like and what the wearer looks like.

Here we see a stylish rock music dandy looking like a nobber in his cat coat and a young lady looking excellent in a yellow thing.

It's not a look I can carry (well, I might look alright in the cat coat)

I bought a rather nice hand made cummerbund in Ndbele colours in 1994. I rooted it out for a wedding last autumn.

It wouldn't even work as a garter now

During my early days as a Blacksmith most if not all wore a waistcoats while at work, I did for a while, now I only wear one with my Kilt when all dressed up or a Potain (waistcoat) if going casual.

Don't think I could get away with wearing too short trousers. You could get crucified for that at school.

Used to be quite fashionable to go out in jeans white T-shirt and waistcoat but I think Status Quo were all the rage back then.
