The ride over the plateau was fantastic. We had a tail wind, the tarmac was smooth and pothole free. We set quite a pace, so much so that I couldn't take any more pictures until we had descended down into Betws Y Coed.
And the climb back out again!
We then climbed for quite a while on the A5 until we reached the village of Cerrigydrugdion then turned....
onto the B4501 and Bala.
Then we hit Bala and the Eisteddfod which was in town! We accosted as many people with our collection boxes as we could during our lunch stop. Rev. Phil was surprisingly adept at relieving people of their change!
Too quickly we had to remount and head out over the Berwyn Mountains, but not before a quick photo op in front of lake Bala.
It was at this point we began to wonder if the Rev. was trying to kill us slowly. After all he had decided on the route and up to this point we thought it was very pleasant, if a little tiring on the legs. It was now we hit the wall out of Bala on the B4391 and there was mutinous talk going on! Fairweather has the exact details on his "gizmo" but there was a hideously steep section and it was all I could do keep a 34/25 going nevermind take a photo of it.
However once we were past the tree line the road began to "level" off and I was able to whip out the camera once more.
About a mile further back from this point there was a lovely double hairpin which was spoiled by some roadworks. However I did feel some satisfaction in scaring the road men, who hadn't heard me coming, and as I swept passed inches from their hole!
Another mile another county ticked off.
We plummeted down the other side of the mountain, the Rev. Rocket Ryan setting a tremendous pace with Fairweather and I trying to catch them up. It was just outside Llangynog that I overestimated the speed I could carry around one corner and ended up doing a bit of cyclo cross. In my defence I would like to say that there were no warning signs to show how tight the bend was and that the cattle grid I had just cleared prevented me from braking at the correct point..............
Anyway Fairweather saw me go off and he only just managed to stay upright too!
So we had a little breather in Llangynog to give us time for our nerves to recover.
And so it was yet another climb out of Llangynog and onto Welshpool.
This was the last photo I managed before we got to Welshpool due to the excellence of the road and my forgetfulness, sorry!
