I thought Branagh's performance in the episode shown last night was just waaaay over the top - particularly at the end.

The really clever thing about the Swedish version is that you have to peer in to the gloom to see the actor - and when you do the subtlety behind that 'everyday' face is a great reward.

Dellzeqq - I disagree. Whilst his mugging and gurning and twitchy middle distance staring was irritating the heck out of me the lovely Helen reminded me that I also behaved in a very similar fashion whilst in the depths of a breakdown.

Given the average emotional collapse is usually portrayed on TV by people in soap opera's who pass themselves off as 'actors' I thought his was pretty subtle in retrospect.

There's a real skill to being able to portray being on the edge of crying. Lesser actors are crying, or not crying. Getting that catch in the voice is something else...

At the end, I did not think he was crying because the girl had shot herself. He was crying because until that point, he had tried to "play down" his grief. The death of the murderer, and knowing that it was her grief that drove her to the murders, finally meant that he could no longer ignore his own grief.

In the Swedish version there was more detail about his relationship, or lack of it, with his father. The Swedish version seems to have more depth in the characters.

I defended his acting earlier in the thread but I have to agree last night he was definitely at the hammy end of the hamometer.

Anyway, yes, the Swedish version is infinitely better and I look forwards to watching every new episode.
By the way, did anyone see the programme about it all and the author of the books the other night there??

I think the Swedish version is so much better than the English one. I would think this current series will be repeated. Next Saturday is the last one, isn't it?

Sometimes I watch it on Saturdays and Thursdays.
