A comment posted on one of my videos by what is probably the stupidest person I have ever come across.

Rule 163 of the highway code seriously needs updating. These days cars are much safer than this silly pamphlet would suggest. Even basic cars today have ABS and power steering as standard. These camera cyclists exploit and twist rule 163 to get drivers into trouble, and of couse to make YouTube videos. In this day and age, for cars traveling 40mph or less, I think 1 foot, or say half a meter from the bikes handlebars is more than enough space for a safe pass. The UK roads are for everybody.

He repeats him self several times... as cars have better safety aids, it is ok to pass cyclists much closer than what rule 163 suggests.

He's winding you up. That actual human does not actually exist in the real world in actual fact. If he did my head would explode followed by the universe imploding.

He's been trolling one of my videos... Apparently my mrs rides a penny farthing and that's why she came off rather than being passed too close.

Had a driver pass me with a foot spare today - perhaps it was one in the same.

Inevitably caught him up at the next set of lights - knocked on the window, I was polite and explained. He was going to start to say I should be closer to the kerb, but when I said "did you see the car pull in front of me and park-I'd have been toast if the guy would have opened his door" he did seem to acknowledge this. Result.:becool:

There have been a lot of changes since I started cycling 53 summers ago but one thing has not changed - close overtakes - motorists were being advised to leave a cyclist with 'sufficient wobble room'.
For those bleating about rule 163, may I make a suggestion? Let's have Rules 163b,c and d.
Rule 163b: Motorists, in slow moving or stationary traffic, please leave a gap of at least two doors widths between you and the vehicle at the side of you to allow cyclists to pass safely between wehicles
Rule 163c: Cyclists when filtering do not enter if the gap is not at least 3 foot on each side of your bicycle. Wait until there is sufficient room.
Rule 163d: Cyclists, when overtaking other traffic please give them the three foot that you are bleating about when you are being overtaken.:

Rule 163b: not sure how this is feasible.. Many roads I know are not wide enough to allow for this.
Rule 163c/d: 3 foot on each side of the bicycle? My handle bars are around 1.3ft wide, so for me to pass/filter I would need a space of 7.3ft :O

Would you care to go into more detail about the basis behind your thinking on each of these points?
