I always carry a printout of that and other cycling related rules with me in a little bag, just in case I get into a confrontation, I can use it to explain my reasoning for questioning the persons driving. I could have used it today, but thought better of it because the WVM that passed me at a pinch point and then brake tested me was an absolute tool and wouldnt have listened anyway.

OK, I admit I had to Google "Highway Code Rule 163" to find out what it was.
This is it:

You want motorists to give you at least 3 foot space, OK, but you have have to give the motorists the same courtesy. There must be 3 foot between you and the car on your left and the same between you and the car on the right.
If there is not a gap of about 7'3" between cars - do not filter; you are in the door zone and that is dangerous.
My post was, like this thread, a joke!

I think exactly the same whenever I watch the irate videos some cyclists post... especially when they pass stationary cars down the white line with moving vehicles coming towards them in the opposite direction- the cyclists never see the irony of their actions as they squeeze through stupidly small gaps in traffic..

see post 14.

hypothetically- its down to personal choice of putting oneselfin that position or having the situation foisted upon you. one gives you a smidgin more control that the other.

personally i don't do it

Not talking about stationary traffic where I can understand that the cyclist may have better close control at low speeds... I mean the idiots who squeeze through gaps, including clearing buses, while the traffic is moving, often at normal speed in the opposite direction. One skip on a white line and they are in trouble.

But as you say it's their personal choice.

Well, I agree with that, but I'm pretty sure it's not what Hippo was talking about.

Sorry Gaz, didn't see it before... just had a quick look through again to see where I'd missed it but can't spot it, otherwise I wouldn't have posted the You Tube clip. Doesn't stop it being an horrendously stupid piece of cycling though.

That isn't a warning against filtering, it's a warning against riding brakeless on fixed gear bikes. Notice the guy locks his legs in a poor attempt at stopping before entering the gap. Although everything else about his riding is stupid too.

To be honest Matthew, I don't know who would listen to you preaching.

If anyone tried to demonstrate, through the use of literature, the 'error of my ways' I think I'd force feed it to its owner.

I'd leave 'conversion' and 'education' to other preachers who can do it with impunity - like the police.
