Is your hub the 7000 or 500 series? The former rests in 8th gear and the cable pulls over the top of the hub, while the latter rests in 1st gear and the cable pulls under the hub. Either will work but you need the correct one if you want the shifter to display the gear position correctly.
The relevant model number will be marked on the hub between the flanges.

Prolly just as well... im struggling to find it... found the 8-speed Sturmey one at last, so there is that I suppose :-)
