I have a Specialized FRS endure mountain bike (year 2000 I think) that is in good shape. Just the normal wear a tare on it. Nothing is broken or ruined. I am looking to sell it and put forth some money for a road bike. I don't know what kind of road bike I am looking for. I know that I am a beginner and am not looking for the newest one. I am looking for a road bike that I can use for long treks and still be comfortable. I will also need it to carry more than my weight but the weight of my gear as well. My price range would probably be in the 800 dollar range. I know that new bikes are too expensive for me, so I would be looking on craigslist or eBay for a bike. What would best fit me?

This is typically a UK forum, so we may not be familiar with Craiglist or even how much 800 dollars is. Is that 800 dollars US, Canadian or Australian?

Anyway, my advise would be to go down to a local bike shop and see what they have.

I advise friends to first know the correct size frame needed, then look on e bay or Gumtree (UK site similar to Craigslist classified as section) for older steel or aluminium framed bikes. These are often referred to as "vintage" and some sellers try to charge a premium, but you can still get bargains with a bit of searching.
Look for 700 wheels fitted, as the old 27 inch ones are becoming obsolete. Check the bike thoroughly before handing cash over, and do a little research to ensure replacing parts, if needed, won't pose any problems.
This is just my opinion, based on the fact that if, in the future, you decide get a new bike, you can then sell it and not lose out or even make a profit.

I apologize pclay, 1 US dollar is equivalent to 1.39 Canadian dollar, and Craigslist is a classified advertisements website with sections devoted to jobs, housing, personals, for sale, items wanted, services, community, gigs, résumés, and discussion forums.

odav: Thank you for the information. I appreciate it very much.

What do you think I could get out of my specialized bike that I have. Brand new, I think it sold for 1200 US dollar.
