I've found the thing with overshoes is yes, they are waterproof i.e. they will keep your shoes dry, how long they stay that way depends on how heavy the rain is and/or how long you are out. It's like saying a carrier bag keeps your feet dry, yeah it will, if you're outside for 1 minute.
I have some Shimano Neoprene ones that keep out a lot of wet stuff over the 1 1/2 hour commute. Even when my feet get wet though, they keep them snug kinda like the wetsuit effect.
Going after an accessory that you put over your shoes to keep them perfectly dry over a long period is, I believe, a mythical concept.

They can't. But they will stop your feet from getting cold, which is the important thing.

waterproof = wet from the inside out, but still warm.
windproof = wet from the outside in, but still warm.

It amounts to the same thing.
Off topic, but I liked your old avatar, it was very you! Made me laugh.......

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Cycling through the floods a couple of years ago I was surprised how warm (relatively speaking) merino socks kept my feet. Was also wearing Endura Road overshoes (Look pedals) and sandwich bags over the socks, but once the water was over bottom bracket height no way will your feet stay dry. The Road overshoes are generally OK, and the Endura MT500 (SPDs) seem pretty good too, but none of them will keep your feet dry in very wet conditions. The water gets in around the cleats as well as from the top.

I've got on well with the Endura road overshoes (now on my third pair) but found them quite fragile and susceptible to damage and tears from scuffing (current pair are held together by repair tape). I've got some specialized winter boots wrapped and under the tree, so looking forward to my first post Christmas outing.

The water always gets in somewhere if its that bad. But after years of overshoes and cold wet feet the only way to go is ...... give up and buy some good winter boots.
Not a cheap option but for warm dry feet in my opinion the only choice and probably not much more than a pair of decent overshoes and sealskinz socks.

Note to self......Must get some shoe deodorant to help with the smell of cycling shoes after they've dried out. (Smells like cat pee) ^_^

For some reason, I no longer have that problem. Used to badly but the last year or so it's gone away.

I've never tried this but I read that putting your shoes in the freezer will get rid of the cat pee smell.

That's definitely 'outside the box' thinking.......Frozen cycling shoes.

Apparently kills all the bacteria. You should probably leave time for the shoes to warm up again though before putting them on. . It's also probably easier to get away with if you live alone. If you don't live alone now, you may do after others find your shoes in the freezer.

Commuting daily I suffer in all weathers. I don't think any overshoes are completely "waterproof". By design they all have a hole in the top for your leg and one in the bottom for your cleat. Wet feet go hand-in-hand with winter riding. I think it's just the degree of moisture they let in and how warm your feet remain once wet. Live with it.

I use a £10 pair of Planet X Neoprene ones. Zip up the back, Velcro underneath, reflective detailing. Do as good a job as ones three or four times the price, I have found.

On the upside for a whole two days this week I got to leave them off as IT WAS DRY!!
I felt naked
