I've just had a civil discussion with a car driver.
Usual scenario, he overtook me too closely when there was no need. I caught up with him at the next traffic lights, where he had stopped over the first stop line, made eye contact but said/did nothing, just pulled in front of him in the advanced box.
We both take off, going straight on, & right after the lights he did it again! Overtook much too close for my liking - I've had worse of course, but decided twice in 5 minutes is taking the pee. Apparently he lived about 400 yards further on, as he parked & got out, so when I (puff, pant) got there, I stopped for a chat.
(Bear with me if you will, there's a query eventually!)
So we're discussing for a few minutes - me asking if he knows how much room he's meant to give a bike, if he's read the Highway Code recently, if he's cycled recently, potholes, gusts of wind - you know the sort of stuff, I'm sure. He's adamant that he overtook me carefully & gave me plenty of room (9" to 12" - gee thanks), the roads are the council's fault, most cyclists ignore red lights etc etc. So eventually we agreed to differ - my parting request was that he give cyclists a bit more consideration in future.
The point of this ramble, finally - should I have bothered? Will he be more careful of us in future or deliberately aim at the next bike he sees? Was I risking a road rage attack or being civic-minded? Will he go & read the HC? Should I go & let his tyres down? (Just kidding!)
Dunno, I'm new-ish at bike commuting, & I'm confused. Any thoughts?
