A point I came across in the commuting section, but I thought I'd ask it here.

Why is it that the Brits (or most of them) don't wash their backsides after unloading. I mean I've travelled to many places abroad - Asia & Africa and the toilet cubicles there have a small watering can (or similar) so that you can wash your b8ckside.

Yet, in Britain all toilets have tissues. Yeah, tissues are okay for removing excess but they always leave bits behind (sorry, if you're having eating).

Any ideas, why this developed country has not developed in this regard?

Quite right Moodyman. As Francois Rabelais put it:

Shall at his ballocks leave some chips"

But won't these different countries also have substantial differences in toilets, plumbing, hygiene, diet and therefore ultimate output? How and why you clean will vary according to need, custom and practice.

Horses for courses surely.

If you had S!*t on any other part of your body would you wash it or wipe it off with some tissue?
My Italian inlaws are always amazed by the lack of bidets in this country.
I am a convert to washing.
Do they still do that slippery toilet paper (a bit like tracing paper) that was always in school toilets during the 70s? It didn't clean it off, just moved it around a bit.

That's true Chris K.

But surely, we should have come up with something better than paper by now.

Using water to clean you rear is cleaner and better than flushing a load tissue paper down the loo pipe.

Not suggesting that we have watering cans. How about designing toilets with a small built in tap which takes water from the flush tank. You press a button and it fires water to your rear and you then wash your ass with your other hand.

Then you dry with (a bit of) tissue and wash you hands with soap.

Do other countries othwerwise wash themselves at least once a day downstairs and launder as often as we do? It probably pays to keep yourself cleaner in Africa, say, on an ongoing basis where heat and the possibility of infection, etc. is a bigger issue.

Bidets are great, btw.

Speak for yourself - alway's use Andrex "fresh" flushable wet wipes.

Don't some of the countries you mentioned also frown upon the use of cutlery. Then use the same hands they've wiped their nether regions with to eat their food? ;)

According to experts, if our diet was properly balanced there would be nothing to wipe off!

What a sh1t thread .........

One has to stay impeccably clean and fragranced for the saddle. The thought of leaving skid marks is disgusting.

There are many things that other countries could learn from us. For example, I've seen people in Asia remove flies from a drink and carry on drinking. That's pretty unhygienic.

The point isn't that they're better than us, but I'm surprised that we haven't thought to ourselves that there's a better way than tissue.
