If it is in the loft I would advise getting the pros in, it could extend into your wall cavity as well.

Took mine out fairly easily and sans any sharp moments or flailing.
if you're going to tackle it yourself you need a big stick and lots of cans of that nest destroying foam.
pop on a rubberised raincoat and cloves for protection, sinch it tight so you look like kenny from southpark
anyhoo late at night spray the entrences and the nest and crack it open with the stick whilst spraying.
empty a can or two over the blighters and make a decent scarper of it.
i wasted two cans just spraying the nest when i should have cracked it at the same time, had to go up the next day and do it again.
still its all dealt with now. was about the size of a footie.
pro's use a type of bug bomb poison that effectively coats all your loft material in permethrin which is harmfull to humans as well as bugs. also it'll coat anything you have in the loft in the stuff too.
MIL lost alot of my wifes childhood things that way.
