Been on a meter ever since they were first available. Our water rates were based on rateable value and when the meter was in they dropped to a small fraction of what we were paying before. That was with two adults and three kids.
Now there is just two adults here for most of the time our water consumption has dropped a good bit. Mind you I never have a bath nor does Mrs Colly.*
I don't waste water but I'm not particularly frugal either.

* Did away with the bath and just have a shower installed.^_^

This is a good plan. I live by myself with no water meter I am getting shafted for definite. My main fear having a water meter fitted is that I believe that they are actually not fitted at the property itself but somewhere on the street. If there is a leak between the meter and the house you are responsible for it. I guess using your method would highlight a leak but lord knows how much it would be to fix.

You are responsible for a leak on your supply pipe even without a water meter, in that your supplier can make you mend it.
They are normally fitted inside the boundaries of your property. Mine certainly is.

A few years back, son and daughter moved out... Great time to get a water meter we thought. Neighbour said we could plug the hose into his outside tap to wash the car and water the weeds.. Happy days!!
Then..... Son moved back. Daughter, now sporting our beautiful granddaughter, moved back as well!

As our bills were going to rocket, we reckoned, we contacted the H2O company and they said we could revert to annual billing but if we got a meter again we couldn't reverse the decision.

I think you do best if you're a small family in a big house.

Exactly - family ianrauk is 2 adults & 1 3yo in a 3bed Semi, soon to be extended with loft conversion and en suite.

However, the littlun's swimming pool and the garden do both use a lot of water in the summer months.

So still umming and aahing

We've had one fitted for the last three years since moving, 3 bed semi with power shower and bath. The gardens front and rear have water butts for the flowers etc. The water rates on the rateable value is approx £720.00 with the meter we are paying around £350.00.

Yes, three of us and ours roughly halved when we got a meter.

The way my 2 youngest kids like to not quite turn off the tap, I'm glad we didn't get a meter.

My retired Dad was on about how much he had saved but they don't use much water at all. We have to run the dishwasher and washing machine almost daily.

We have had to have water meters but I am saving about £70 a year, three of us, two adults and a seven year old. A girl I work with and her family (three adults) have a bath every day instead of a shower. Now, her and her son like a hot bath so they let the taps run while they soak and the excess water runs into the overflow. Her bill has doubled and gone from just above £300 pa to over £700 pa.
Can't be doing her heating bills much good, either.
She has not got a shower but doesn't want the expense of getting one fitted. This compares to seeing her water bills double and, as you say, the hidden extra of her water heating bills.
