Waterbirds

Random one this, admittedly.

The other week, cycling round Holland, I saw this bird. (This is a genuine ornithology question :rofl:). It was a water bird, fairly large (bigger than a duck, smaller than a heron). It had a black head and a white body and a really long beak which curved downwards. It was very distinctive.

I didn't know what it is and can't identify it on any websites. Anyone good at birding? What was it??

RSPB website has a bird identifier.
It wasn't an avocet was it? I guess its beak curves upwards though...
