Waterproof (or windproof)?

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a decent waterproof (probably a bit hopeful) or windproof.

I'm after something which is easily stowable and suitable for riding long distances in (ie. not too boil in the bag). Budget is probably £50 tops.

I had been swayed to look at an Altura Night Vision (and I've reserved one at Halfords for £30) but I have concerns this will be far too hot.

Night vision is a winter jacket really. The blitz is lighter but not much. The pocket rocket or endura pak a jak are light weight waterproofs with some wind resistance. What sort or conditions do you need it for?

It was winter yesterday. ;-)

I was looking for something to get me through a couple of summer sportives really. I was only tempted by the low price of the Altura so might pick that up anyway and get a windproof as well.

I am lying by a pool In Turkey, sweating in the sunshine ;)

I feel the cold but the night vision is too hot for me if its over about 5-7 deg. £30 is a very good price for it for the winter

A windproof gilet is a flexible piece of kit for Warner weather, and arm warmers

Tenn Vapor jacket is about as good as it gets for my budget. I have tried other cheap ones and they are nowhere near as good, yes waterproof but definitely boil in the bag, and then the Aldi one that is brilliant for not sweating and supposedly water repelant, it's more like a tea bag. The Vapor has been totally waterproof and I would never describe it as boil in the bag either. Worth a punt for only £29.99.

I only use a waterproof in the winter rain because you just end up too hot and wet from sweat instead of rain.

I have one of those. For a "budget" waterproof it is very good.
Packs away quite small but not as small as some so sticks out of top of jersey pocket. I'd say good for a Sportive if you are expecting rain.
However IME it is a mistake to heed the advice in the description about going a size up.
I'd say go down a size if you want a loose fit, down two sizes if you want close fitting.

For better weather forecasts (when?) a "showerproof/windproof" like the Montane Featherlight (or indeed the Aldi one) is probably more suitable.

I have an Altura Nevis which was around £50 and it's a piece of crap - badly made, bulky, boil in the bag, and after washing it once I've found the membrane in soluble.

So now it's an Endure Helium for me. Beautifully designed and constructed, keeps me dry and surprisingly condensation free in the lovely Cumbrian weather. Great minimalist design that easily stows in the jersey back pocket too. It's a bit outside your budget, but well worth the extra.
