Another vote for the Deuter. I used to use the plastic bag method for years and it took a few trips with the Deuter and cover to convince me my stuff was safe.

Of course you could always do things with style and panache and get a Carradice. Waterproof enough to carry my laptop without a cover

Buy a dry bag off e Bay and put it Inside the rucksack. Problem solved.

It sounds like multiple dry bags are what you need. That way you can divide up your luggage according to your needs. Planet X currently have a sale...

Surely the nikwax waterproofing option won't work as water will get in through the zips?

I am having the same dilemma, it's sooooooo wet at the moment. And very muddy so back pack gets filthy.

I have heard from people that have used Nikwax that it is useless

^^ On the off chance I've used spare bits of nikwax on all sorts of stuff and it never really does much good. Even the stuff designed for tents won't really do much good on most of the fabrics I've tried. Even if it did, zips and seams are still a weak point.

Not being a fan of rucsacs on bikes except for short hikes into town and my commuting bike being a tourer as oppose to a 'roadie', I stick with Carradice Super C panniers & rackbag. Never let me down even in the heaviest downpours.:rain:

I've got a small rucksack for cycling which has a fold up waterproof cover held on by an elastic strap at the bottom so you won't lose/forget it and you just tuck it into a pouch at the bottom of the bag when not in use. Might not be entirely waterproof if it is chucking it down all day but perfectly acceptable for a 30 minute commute.

Makes me think of the "more money than sense" thread elsewhere. Just use bin liners, they cost next to nothing and do the job fine.
