I use enduro over shoes bit like this

fairly waterproof but, the thing is its not the water I dislike. Its the cold. overshoes may let water in (especially down from the leg) but they stay warm.

dont fixate about waterproofs, nothing works after a good long exposure (as the riders to Whetstable a few weeks back will testify).

you and your bike are both waterproof. perhaps consider warmth, not dryness

i agree jonny 100%, me and my bike are waterproof. if i was out for only a short ride i perhaps wouldn't bother, but 50 plus rides i would prefer to be warm and dry. and the wetter you get the colder you become.one other solution is .......forget it , just stay in.

As the OPs have said, there's no such thing as breathable and waterproof - the more you get of the former, the less you get of the latter and vice versa. Keeping warm is the key. I'd recommend a good Merino base layer over an expensive waterproof any day, Merino just seems to keep me warmer than synthetics regardless of how soaked I am with sweat or rain. You can get a decent value DHB one from Wiggle.

In terms of overshoes, I'd recommend the Endura ones but they will wear in time. If you want a lightweight rain jacket which is compact then I recommend this one. You will boil with high intensity exercise and if you have too many layers but it will keep the rain off

don't use overshoes.. have spent loads on different types/brands none worked like i wanted them to, so gave up looking..
however Sidi Diablo waterproof boots are a godsend http://www.sidiuk.co.uk/Winter/DiaboloGTX.htm
worn with a pair of thick socks for extra warmth when it gets really cold... nice n dry n toasty

regarding packable waterproof jackets I've used the
Altura Pocket rocket. (good cut and packs quite small, has a nice stretchy bag to store in. but arms are a bit flappy)
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/altura-pocket-rocket-waterproof-cycling-jacket/

DHB Minima S. (better cut in my opinion, packs small but not as small as the Pocket rocket, nicer colours, ive got the blue)
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-minima-s-waterproof-jacket/

BBB Baseshield. (smallest packsize and better cut of the three, no storage bag, but wetter on the inside due to trapped moisture, compared with the other two)
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/bbb-baseshield-mens-rain-jacket/

all the packable jackets I have, have been worn over a Gore Phantom.
