Ways to celebrate a 'significant' birthday

A happy topic for Thursday, or what I like to refer to as weekend eve-eve:
I have a 'significant' birthday next year, and I would like to throw a big party/ceilidh for all my friends and family cos I like that kind of thing. Have any of you celebrated 'significant' birthdays in novel and interesting ways, and if so, what did you do?

On my 30th birthday I was in a mountain hut in Iceland, on a XC skiing holiday. No party as such but I did manage a wee drinkie at midnight on the way in and the way out of the birthday.

On my 40th I was climbing in Wales, spent the day out on a classic but little frequented rock climb, then organised a curry and a few pints in Llanberis with my mates. Climbed the next day too, nice.

I'm easily pleased.

A friend had his 40th in a youth hostel in the Lake District. We took over the hostel. It was a walk in one - a few km from the car park and nothing too difficult just a stroll up the path (in the rain). During the weekend, we had some lovely walks. The main event was a fancy dress party - western theme with murder mystery game. Each of the particpants were given a character, and asked to dress to meet the character. We then played out the murder mystery - cracking fun.

I had my 40th in Austin, Texas - Mexican food, micro-brewery beer and country music. What more could you ask for y'all?

A mid life crisis is called for. You know that bike you've seen, you like but can't afford? Slap it on the credit card and then sign yourself up for that 500km audax, LEJG, LEL, C2C, Durham to Paris, TransAmerica etc. you have always said you should do before you die.

I have to say you look pretty good for Fifty.

Yeah I've been waiting for that one to come along and I'm intrigued as to what form it will take, having seen a number of my male friends go through theirs! I may opt for extensive plastic surgery and a toy boy ha ha! But since I've spent most of my *current decade* doing ridiculous cycling endurance things/hurling myself off cliffs on a bike etc maybe I'm about to enter a jabba the hutt phase...

Er.....a splurge week in Vegas then with the sole aim of eating in every buffet on the strip. Throw in a helicopter ride over Grand Canyon and a weeks long MTB cycle ride from Vegas to San Francisco via Death Valley and Yosemite National Park. Or the other way round.

Now that one I could go for.

Hmmm. It occurs to me that I've never celebrated a decade birthday in any significant way at all.

9 years to plan for the next then....

Half a bottle of Scotch and ignoring the whole thing and it somehow seems less horrid.

My 30th was a joint Birthday and leaving party! I left my job and the area I'd lived in for 8 years and went back to Uni. Absolutely no regrets whatsoever.

A friend had a joint 40th and Last Munro party. I was thinking of trying for the same, but triathlon got in the way and there's no way I'm going to achieve that now. Maybe 50th?!

No suggestions really because I tend not to celebrate birthdays at all, x0th or otherwise. Maybe go out for lunch/dinner with my wife on or around the date, but nothing special. Some may think that sad but it is true. I think my last party was when I was 5 or 6, and even that was shared with my younger brother because his birthday was 3 weeks after mine. So.... pin the tail on the donkey perhaps?

My 50th next year.... or is it? Might be the year after! What year are we in!
