They mean "literally", as in not true.

Obviously I will scrap the bike, sit on the sofa eating take-aways, drink Vodka like it's water and start chain smoking as it is "obviously" a healthier option.

Ew, I clicked the link. I feel dirty now.

To save my fellow CCers from polluting their souls, this is a paper in the Lancet classifying the "final straw" causes of heart attacks: i.e the last little bit of stress that tips someone over the edge when they'e already cruising for a heart attack, not the underlying cause. Traffic of all kinds was found to be the biggest factor, but more so for cyclists because it's traffic combined with exercise.

It's not an excuse to stop cycling, because regular exercise is going to lower your risk of heart disease in the first place and make you less likely to end up in a situation where the "final straw" risks are relevant

Woooooosh at Rick from Coventry

All bikes should be banned, as a road tax payer, I can't stand cyclists and how they think they own the road. Who do they think they are taking up most of a lane that I'm paying for?

Not to worry. Tomorrow's Daily Mail will have conclusive proof that a diet of red wine, chocolate and cranberry juice prevents all heart attacks. Or causes them. One or the other, they haven't quite decided yet...

Us Aussies over here in Melbourne are having a big laugh over this one too, on the BV forums.

Of course, we have our own tabloid press that tends to spew out similar cr@p regularly, usually based on very questionable research.

As any city cyclist will know, riding your bike in heavy traffic can be, metaphorically speaking, a heartstopping experience. But now research has found that it is literally one of the biggest triggers of heart attacks.

Here, literally, is a trigger:

So are we on to - cyclists literally shooting heart attack victims - or other people literally shooting cyclists to give them heart attacks - or what ...?

The article was OK (it made it clear that it was talking about final staw issues. Would have preferred it mention the benefits of cycling (or excercise at least).

But the comments are great, really enjoyed them, so much hate so much feeling. Loved it.

Funny really. After I had a heart attack I was told I'd probably survived and as well as I had because I was fit. For fit read cycle a lot.

OK DM, Show me the word cycling in the article summary

Not being a Lancet subscriber I can't get access to the full article but here's an extract from the summary:

"Ranking triggers from the highest to the lowest OR resulted in the following order: use of cocaine, heavy meal, smoking of marijuana, negative emotions, physical exertion, positive emotions, anger, sexual activity, traffic exposure, respiratory infections, coffee consumption, air pollution"

Those I've coloured orange are involved in city cycling, but the logic of the article is of the cats are animals therefore all animals are cats variety

So, if Mr Fat B@st@rd gets out of his SUV and rides his bike for the first time in 30 years, he is more likely to have a heart attack on that day than if he hadn't bothered.

The headline says: "Why cycling to work is one of the biggest causes of heart attacks", which is complete BS. I should imagine reading Daily Mail headlines is one of the biggest triggers as well.

You mean yours actually read research rather than just making it up?
