It all makes sense now. The error of my ways was explained to me by a lovely lady who decided to come up on the left of me at a T junction where I was waiting to turn right. I thought it was a bit strange the way she forced herself up the inside of me to get to the give way line.
So, with it being a busy road that I was pulling out onto I tested the water with a few 'false starts' and each time I moved forwards a little so did she.
I decided to go for a gap that would easily accommodate a cyclist but may have been a bit tight for a car and was certainly too tight for a bike and a car at the same time. She decided to follow me but because of my positioning she was left on the wrong side of the road, trying to pass me into oncoming traffic.
Bless her, once she had returned back to her side of the road she had the decency to stop to let me know that because she was in a car cyclists had to wait.
Although she didn't quite put it like that.... And she seemed quite angry.
