One of my friends has a site with Orchard Hosting who have just announced that they're packing it in. Not bankrupt or anything, but changing their focus and no longer offering hosting. They've said that they'll continue to host existing sites until June, but then they're pulling the plug.

So, I have two questions.

1) Can anyone recommend good, reliable web hosts?

2) She's paid for a year's hosting but will only be getting 6 months. Is she entitled to a refund for the remaining 6 months?

a few questions bud.

what are you disk/memory/bandwidth requirement?

I take it that they are on shared hosting?

Is the company in the uk? if so, they should be able to get 6 months money back.

Yup they're UK. Manchester, in fact. Just seen this on their terms and conditions page:
Customers paying for services in units greater than 1 month will be refunded the balance of unused fees for the services within a reasonable time after termination.
So fingers crossed.

As for requirements, it's pretty basic at the moment. She's in the process of setting up a small business and needs a web presence as a means of advertising: just a few pages of text with some images.

Thanks glasgowcyclist and Ffoeg.

ah great stuff, nothing complicated then. She should be able to get something cheap then.

you generally pay a lot more for hosting in the uk, compared to the states but you get better support and for what she is after, it wont cost much extra.

Worth asking her to check that her domain name aint tied into the hosting deal, some isp's used to give you a 'free' domain name, then charge you and arm and leg to retain it when you left them.

I moved from the awful 1and1Internet years ago to Lunarpages - a US company. Been brilliant - support is first class and they're not expensive either.

On Monday of this week I searched this site for advice on webhosting, as you do, cyclists dabble in everything it seems. This thread was very useful, in the end chose Heartinternet as it seemed the best fit for my "beginners" needs, and has been excellent so far!

Thank you everyone.
