Websites for calculating cycling journeys

Hi all,

I'm a long time lurker and first time poster!

Finally plucked up the courage to move from weekend cyclist to commuter and am planning my first cycle commute tomorrow.

Would love some help on working out the best cycling routes for commuting. Is there a website that allows you to choose cycling as an option, as google does for driving or walking?

My normal commute takes me up the A5 from Nuneaton to Lichfield, and I don't fancy riding that road.

Cheers,

Kev.

I planned one of my recent route changes using Bikehub and it showed me a couple of cut-through's that I didn't know about. I found the website a crap compared to say, Google maps, but the results were worth it.

cyclestreets.net is pretty good. It gives you 3 routes: fastest (using any road, no matter how scary), quietest (avoiding busy roads and using cycle paths where possible) and balanced (a mix between the two).

Strange that Google doesn't have cycling as an option in the UK. The B5000 to Tamworth and the A51 would seem to be the most obvious secondary choice.

Note, however, that the A5 has two lanes in each direction, whereas the alternative route has only one lane each way. On the A5, motorists will find it much easier to pass you. I find it much more stressful to ride on a single lane where cars can get stuck behind me.

I like bikeroutetoaster. It's got a cycle option which shows cycle lanes and paths.
