just wondering if anyone has had any dealings with one of these gold buying companies. My mum gave me a buzz today saying that she was thinking of selling her old gold to one of these places and what I thought first response was "oh no here we go". She then proceeded to tell me that they are offering £8+ per gram which I thought was a bit far fetched but had a look around a sure enough that's about right. So i have had a little look around for the old crap I don't wear anymore and got about 35grams from 3 small rings and a chain, £250. This then prompted the wife to have a look at her old gold and come up with £100s worth (to say we should put them in together and split the money:wacko:)

This all seems to good to be true to me. I was listening to radio 2 (yes my life is over) the other day and they were talking about these places not giving the full value, but I didn't even pay this much for it when I bought them new. the adverts on TV are the most stupid annoying ads in the world and that has put me off even looking into it before but to have £350 just sitting collecting dust seems silly.

so has anyone sold their gold yet? what happened if you did?

bbc news did a report on them and other similar companies, they give you extremely little amounts of money for your gold. you will be much better off going to a jeweller on the high street.

I wouldn't touch them with an extra-long remote-controlled barge-pole. I put them in the same category as cash-converters - they will find a way to rip you off!

Yeah I know that but to be honest if they give me £350 for some crap I don't wear anymore and if I did would be called a chav then I'm sure I dont mind being ripped off.

Well, obviously, they don't give the best possible price for the Gold...that's how they make their money!

The problem with these companies is that they collect your gold by post and then give you a silly stupidly low offer. You can, of course, refuse the offer and they will then return your gold. Like hell they would!

The reports show that they are very difficult to contact and so you will not be able to get in touch before the deadline is up and even if you could they would have melted the gold already.

Also they only 'value' the gold and remove, for their own benefit, any valuable gems, etc that are still attached.

The best bet is to take your jewellery to a local trustworthy jeweller to value and then consider that against, say an auctioners for example.

Personally, for the sort of returns avaliable from the TV adverts, I would be putting old clothes and stuff on Ebay and keeping the gold.

Alternatively, just put the gold on Ebay with a good reserve but use a properly registered delivery or make it collection only.

I got a quote for some gold from a stall at my local shopping centre. In that was a 22 carat gold ring, very thick but small, which was my grandmothers. I decided to pull that out and keep it anyway but then decided to go to a jewellers, as I think you'd get more for your money. No way would I post stuff!
