There's a radio 4 and world service guy with a really deep voice who would pronounce the extra syllable - Neil Newness, I think, but it's probably Neil Newnes and he's insisted on putting an extra syllable in that too.

EDIT: no, it's Neil Nunes. I rest my case.
He of the INCREDIBLY loud voice who wakes me up when my radio is on 90 minutes sleep.

Another one that also annoys me is people that pronounce Herbs as Erbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's just an American thing...like the way Irish people always call movies 'fillums'.

True, but in our case it's lack of breeding, in theirs, it's pukkah Bostonian. I think it's related to the old notion that you need to call it 'an' hotel, 'an' hospital - a sort of quasi colonial cringe to our gallic neighbours, once considered the ultimate 'allmark of all things cultured.
