...
What are you trying to kill, and where @MontyVeda ?

all sorts of weeds in a paved back yard. I used round-up last year in the tiny front yard, spot spraying at it kept the weeds at bay for the rest of summer... just strimmed the backyard which was full of bramble, dock leaves, tall pointy things, the odd nettle, a buddleia, more tangles of bramble and the like... so I wanna kill the brambles and the buddleia, give the weeds in the paving an annual spraying and just tend the raised beds with a proper hand weed.

Well, write it down boy ......
I have a particular problem with horsetails. Of course pulling them up is useless as there is always some root left behind that just regrows. Any advice as to what might be effective?

A small nuclear device perhaps?
Do you have any friends or relatives in Australia? Phone them up and ask them to pull the roots through. Sorry I've no better idea. My allotment is infested with horsetail, I dig out bits but generally have to leave it, the roots are so deep they don't take nutrients from my crops and the top doesn't really cast much shade.
I read somewhere that it's a prehistoric plant and it forms the basis of all the crude oil in the world and l console myself with that.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
I am told that Domestos will kill just about everything. But it's almost certainly not licensed as a weedkiller.

Is it possible to mow it? Mow it close, let it grow up 3-6" and mow it again ad nauseum. Make it expend all its energy on trying to regrow.
It might be a long term project.

Sounds like Roundup then....

I bought some land in 1997 that was untouched since the army camped on it during the war, it was massively overgrown with every undesirable weed, gristle, bramble a whatever. Two sprays with Roundup got shot of the lot, the plough and other assorted farm machinery soon sorted it out from there.

"A Critical View by a Horticulture Expert
Robert Cox an expert on horticulture at the Colorado State University says:“Using bleach to kill weeds is not a good idea.”

The constituents of bleach are sodium hypochlorite, and the pH level is about 11.

It raises the pH level of soil and adds sodium to it as the bleach drips off leaves, making it harder to grow any other desirable plants."

As in spray vinegar on? Not tried it, does it work?
I have used vinegar as weedkiller. It does kill plants, especially grass and green leafy types. You need to use the distilled (clear) stuff, but doing a bit of Googling I found that you need 10% acetic acid concentration to stand any chance of killing the roots, but the stuff available in shops is only 5%. There is information available on the internet, as I recall, many people recommend mixing it with salt and washing up liquid, because not much survives salt and the washing up liquid helps the fluid stick to the leaves.

I also made some of my own weedkiller by mixing about 2kg of salt into a large bucket of boiling water, stirring to dissolve the salt and then adding a bottle of cheap bleach. It worked quire well, but the weeds eventually grew back. have recently used one of those pressure cannisters of Round Up, which can be refilled, so when the Round Up is gone I am going to try using the cannister to spray my own concoction.
