My solution is a trailer. I bought a Carry Freedom Large trailer and built up a box directly into the platform. With a couple of panniers on the bike for delicate things and the rest piled into the box on the trailer I have the capacity for a weeks worth of shopping. Round trip is about 7 miles to the largest Supermarket in the area. As my rides are recumbent trikes, the theft issue is a little less pressing as they are hardly things you can 'sell down the pub', but I do use some serious locks on the trike and trailer outside the Supermarket!

Trailer would be a luxury for me at this stage, just in case it doesn't work out! That said, I do keep an eye out on gumtree for a used trailer/bargain as it is something I have considered
Bit of a long-shot, but it might be worth signing up to your local freecycle group and putting out an appeal - it's the kind of thing people buy in a burst of enthusiasm, then find they don't use...or simply get too old for. And then what do you do with the thing? (I'd imagine they're often owned by the kind of people who, in such a situation, would like to see it 'go to a good home'.)

Took me by surprise I swear. I had guests and was wildly casting about for something to cook. Thought I might find a nice easy fillet of something but there it was, making that sideways kissy-face at me...

I may have to go and get apples on the Peugeot this weekend. The berm around our subdivision has trees, seemingly selected at random, including several apple trees. Nothing like going straight to the source. We are also getting some sort of edible forest at a nearby (3 mi ) park, which is supposed to have many nut and fruit trees so children can be taught to fend for themselves. I may volunteer with the project, just to learn and help out a bit.

Sounds lovely, but re the nuts trees - the squirrels will always get there first I'm afraid.

I do one online shop a month and the rest is biked in. I justify it because without it, the driver wouldn't have a job. Unless you have a crop farm in the garden it seems quite ambitious to me. I wouldnt like the pressure of it.

I like the boxy shape - one thing about using a box or basket is that you have structure to protect the squashier items. I would be leery of the words "water-resistant", which essentially mean "not waterproof", but that's only a problem if you're likely to shop in the rain, and of course you can always take a few carrier bags to use as liners.
