I was unsure whether to register with that site, but I did put in the personal details. As a result it told me that by eating 500 less calories per day, or eating 250 less and exercising to use up 250 calories, I could lose the required weight in xx days,:blush:. But it shows what is achievable by making small changes, and well in time for my next birthday.

If I do register have I got to input details every day, or "just" most days to get a good idea of what I am eating?

Now I need to work out how to eat less calories, and use up more calories.

How far do I need to cycle, walk or swim to lose those calories through exercise. I assume that is at least 250 cals worth of exercise a day, and that more exercise would increase fitness and stamina etc. I have also seen a site that will produce a photo of a "Slimmer You". You send them a photo and they digitally alter it to show you as a slimmer person, but they charge a lot of money for what would surely not be that difficult a task for someone with the right knowledge of digital images.

I would guess complete it as often as you feel you need. sometimes however it is surprising the things you forget you eat when you don't write them down. the main benefit these things bring is that you can quickly run down the completed list and identify what you should have missed out of your tummy. Of course we all know what those things are in practise but seeing it in black and white can sometimes be useful. I have just input the last two days when I have been at my parents. Even though I've eaten nothing in between meals the fact they have pudding every meal is a nightmare on the waist line. I thought I'd been relatively good for me whilst there ie. no chocolates or anything in the evening but the reality is that one day was probably ok if I hadn't been trying to lose a few pounds, the other a disaster - though we did sit in the freezing cold at football so hopefully the body burned a few more cals trying to keep warm. I am trying to see the exercise as an added bonus and wish to eat a bit more of the right things and a lot less of the wrong ones!

I use a similar site (an American version that I pay $9 per month for) and it really rewards logging everything - food and exercise. It gives me graphs of how well I'm doing, how many days my net calories are within the weight loss zone, and, most importantly, how many calories I win back through exercise. For example, yesterday I did a 57.5 mile cycle ride in just over four and a half hours and it told me I have earned 3,501 calories. This is all useful info! I tend to find that if I don't log all the food and just decide to estimate it through mental arithmetic in the day, I tend to get it wrong a lot of the time. I have the sort of personality that finds it helpful to have something like a website upon which to track all the food, and it helps significantly with my willpower, but I am sure that for many other people this is not the best way, it'll feel too restricting/like a task.

Well today is the day for me.

Finished off the last bottle of red last night and that's it now. No pizza, beer, wine or crap food for me.

Just need to get rid of this stupid cold thing so I can cycle again. Don't fancy a coughing fit whilst trying to cycle up the hills in Nottingham.

Weighed myself this morning and despite eating nothing but roast dinners and a large amount of alcohol I have maintained my weight - not gained anything not lost anything. So pretty pleased with that.

So its just spirits for new years eve then?

Actually this is part of the willpower/weight loss thing. Once the alcohol was gone in the house missus merlin and myself said we wouldn't be buying anymore.

Plus don't really celebrate New Years - can't these days with 2 kids. Will probably sit and have a nice cup of herbal tea and watch a film on the gogglebox.

not telling you
Thats the right approach. Losing fat (i dont say weight cos it could be good muscle there) starts with a shopping list. If you dont want to get fat, dont buy it. ShePower has just gone out shopping, but i asked her to make a shopping list first as she would impulse buy all the wrong things, as i would too. Usually alceeehol  Stay with it MM!

Listen to ChrisZ.

Bathroom scales Bioimpedence Fat% is effected by hydration levels.

Skinfold calipers are difficult to use on yourself because of the Sub-Scapular measurement - BUT, it can be negated by mathematically manipulating the other three sites by way of a polynomial.

I do a three point skinfold. Tricep, Bicep and Suprilliac. The Subscapula is calced by using the charts from Slimguide's instruction book.

Although the result is not exactly 'Absolute' (+/- 0.25%), it is 'Comparative' if the test method is repeatable.
After five years, I've got it repeatable.

I do not worry about weight. I am 5'9" and 13st 11lb - obese on the BMI chart.
17.5% fat, that's what I check.

I lost 9lbs dieting a few years back.

What I found helpful was the suggestion of cutting 500 calories out of your typical day (3,500 per week).

1lb fat = 3,500 calories.

In my case, as I recall, changing my breakfast accounted for 400-ish, (oatmeal & full fat milk > porridge (uses less oatmeal) & diluted skimmed milk).

At the same time I tried to up my cycling milage.

Sounds an excellent idea. At present I have porridge made with semi-skimmed milk, (and too much sugar) and full-fat milk in my coffee. So I could easily change to skimmed milk with porridge and semi-skimmed with coffee. I was shopping this afternoon and did not buy any nuts or crisps or chocolate. I walked into town instead of taking the car, so that's about three miles walking. I do Pilates once a week, and will be starting Tai Chi ( which includes some energetic stuff) later in January.

I would like to start back on the bike, after a year off due to injury (on the Badminton court). Has anyone found that when you are exercising and therefore feeling more positive, and energetic, that you are less inclined to eat the junk food?

I have some dark choc brazils to finish off.

I definitely eat less junk when exercising - I also find that when I come in from a bike ride I'm actually not that hungry. I tend to find it's when I'm being very sedentary, chilling in front of the TV of whatever, that I start to snack on junk.

As ever...late to this thread.

Our new year diet/detox started yesterday...and we've just caved in and had some Christmas cake. The Carol Vorderman detox is CRUEL. No wheat (fine), no meat or fish (hmm) but it's the no dairy (!!) and no caffeine that is killing. No yoghurt? I LOVE yoghurt. And no Earl Grey in the morning. Hideous.

Anyway...we're having tomorrow evening and Thursday off the detox and starting again on Friday!!

Be careful with the Carol Vorderman detox. A colleague did it a couple of times and was fine but the last time made him really ill. It seemed a bit extreme to me.
