I had a custom 26' wheel made by MERLIN CYCLES about 2 wks ago.

Last night i noticed a noise made by a loose object from inside the rim.

I stripped the rim tape off and it was some sort of metal grommet which is running loose and trapped between the two nipples by the rim join.

I spoke to MERLIN CYCLES today and they said they experience this problem in 10% of the rims they sell and they said to try and remove it myself if i could otherwise they would collect and make good.

I think i will try to 'fish' it out myself - prob easier for all.

Anyone else had this problem and how did you deal with it please????

I had the same problem Will.
It's where the holes had been drilled in the rim for the spokes and some of the metal filings falls inside the rim.
I had to get a wriggle on with the wheel to flush it out.

Quite common, but irritating and I feel for retailers who have to put up with this. They have to fix this at great inconvenience and unnecessary cost.

If you can't fish it out, melt some beeswax and just lock it in place.

Yes, I've seen the same but in all honesty, the builder should have noticed it and fish it out.

I have lost the odd nipple inside and it can be a pain to fish them out sometimes, other times, it takes 10 seconds

Edit: misunderstood the part after two weeks... so I guess there was no way for the builder to notice

The wheelbuilder didn't see it 'cause it only worked loose after a while. This happens. No-one sends stuff out knowing that it will boomerang with considerable inconvenience and cost.

it seemed to have lodged itself just now, or more like wedged itself and is not rattling at the moment.

Is it really important to get it out at all???

MERLIN CYCLES said it was some sort of template that MAVIC uses to do the weld. It can sometimes work itself free and hence rattle

will the wax not put the wheel out of balance, or is the join opposite the valve

Bicycle wheels don't need to be balanced. Just by changing your tube to one with a longer stem, you alter the balance but you cannot feel it at any speed. No need to worry about that. That said, I'm not talking about 10kgs of wax either, just a blog big enough to do what it is supposed to do. The easiest way to do this would be to stuff a little worm of wax into a suitable close to the area of concern and then head the rim in some hot water. Beeswax melts at 60 degrees, so you may have to replenish the water. This is easier than semi-ruining a pot with sticky beeswax.
