So I've finally managed my first cycle commute to work, a healthy 12 miler with over 800ft of climing on mainly country roads and just wanted to say how blooming lovely it was.

Yes I nearly died -twice- through underestimating the hills but the joy of arriving at work riding through the car park to be the only bike in the bike shed as people got out of their cars was great.

The ride was made even sweeter by the shower at the end which was poss the best shower I've ever had.

Not sure the ride home will be very easy as I'm still waiting for the feeling in my legs to return but this is why I chose a Fri for my first ride in.

Emotional story telling over.

Well done! It quickly gets much easier (or you forget how hard it is quicker?)

I always find riding home easier than riding to work, probably psychological rather than physical reasons:tongue:

Whether the ride home is easier or not depends largely upon gradient, I find, having a non-physical job.

Well done, the miles will fly by in future. You can take your time on the way home, I guess.

Well if Helston indicates where you are it certainly is challenging riding around those parts, we wiggled our way to the Lizard from just outside Hayle on a day ride in August and I vividly remember climbing out of Gweek on a poor surfaced road. We did over 80 miles that day and boy did I know it, fabulous countryside though, well done.

It was Helston to Scorrier but avoiding the narrow B-road yeah, really nice ride, it just seemed every hill was preceeded by a corner so no opportunity for momentum- (I'm sure that'll be equally annoying on the way home coming down them again needing to be on the brakes).

The reverse route is 717 ft of climbing so a fair bit less. The bit i'm looking forward to is the bit to my front door as this morning was 1.6 miles of continuous up which hurt having just got the bike out of the garage!

funny, I find the exact opposite...horses for courses and all that. I love the ride in almost without exception but the further out of town it get on the return, the lonelier it feels, the faster the traffic.

I suspect Helston shan't have this problem as his/her ride appears to be all pretty much country riding.

well done. am jealous of that commute. i know how bad the hills down there can be. the ride into newquay from Hendra was nice, butb the ride out was a killer.

...and for everyone who was interested in this thread originally I did make it home- seemed to be going faster, was happier and higher average speed as well when I thought I'd be more tired- maybe I'm catching the bug! cheers for all your support.

Well done!
My ride home is 4.5 miles with a total gain of 550ft - nearly kills me after 12 hours on my feet!
