Well, that was bizarre!

While driving (transporting a bass amp meant cycling was in no way shape or form an option) back from my mates house the other night, I noticed 2 dark figures coming towards me on the nearside of the road, took me quite a while to figure out which way they were travelling.

As they got closer, I noticed that it was 2 people on bikes, cycling on the wrong side of the road, head to toe in black, unlit and without helmets. I tooted my horn, and duefully, they mounted the pavement (?!?)

The real kicker, though, was that when I passed them, I saw it was a middle aged man with 6/7 year old son (presumably) in tow.

I'll never understand the idiocy of some people, the way they were going, I don't think that they would have mounted the pavement if I hadn't tooted at them, otherwise they would have been there already, or on the other side of the road.

Common sense, it seems, is evading more and more of the populace.

I see similar things often...people on bikes in the dark...no lights...all in black and what's worse...a lot of the time headphones plugged into their ears.

Bad cycling irritates me almost as much as bad driving does.

Bauldbairn has picked up on what really made me angry about the situation.

tbh, the man can do what he likes, if he wants to ride towards oncoming traffic, he can be my guest. Doing the same with a child in tow, however, is just on another level.

+1 I totally agree. There's a family near me who cycle to school together every morning and although the children are young they all have lights, all of them wear reflective and high-vis vests over their clothing and they all obey the rules of the road. The route's on a main road but is mainly bus lane and I have massive respect for them. I see them often and I've never had cause to be concerned or fear for the children's safety as they're well supervised and gaining valuable cycle experience.

It proves that there's a right way to do these things, that guy was obviously demonstrating the wrong way.
