Just over a year ago, I bumped into an old acquaintance in my LBS. He was buying a new bike. Last weekend I met him again at a Carry On fancy dress birthday party. (I went as Jack Douglas. ) Whilst talking about cycling, I discovered he was out on his bike most Sundays and, occasionally, during the week. And then he added, in passing, that the previous week he had had to pump the tyres up and "isn't it such a pain when you're not mechanically minded and am attempting something for the first time?" I suggested it might be a good idea to check them at least once a month from now on ...

Ha ! I now have a mental image of Alf Ippititimus trying to pump up a bicycle tyre.

My mate was gutted when we told him that his tyre pressure should be around the 100 mark, he had been cycling everywhere with around 55 in, the same as his mountain bike.
The next time I spoke to him he could not believe how much easier it was with the tyres fully inflated .

It sounds funny, but these are all things we all had to be told or shown at one time or another.

Better he learns today than tomorrow.

If he likes to ride, better he bought a bike this year than not.

I've just done a final (it won't be) bike maintenance session with my daughter before she heads to uni with a shopper and a road bike. She knows stuff, but not all stuff. I know more than her, but by less each month.

And I think it's pretty cool for a man to admit he isn't mechanically minded... Some men (and some women) seem to think it is a genetic inheritance to be able to set up cantilever brakes.. whereas in truth it is not, because they were invented by the Devil to start wars and foster hatred.

Thank you.

I have had my specialized vita for 18 months (ish) now and have pumped the tyres up myself only once - and I actually let more air out than I put in.
I have since worked out which side of the track pump is which, but tbh it's much easier just to smile nicely at whoever is closest at work and let them do it for me.
The metis is a different story, I've changed the inner tube and repaired two punctures and generally pump the tyres every time I use it!
