I have a few and like an old Gillette Tech best. Mine belonged to an old relative but they can be purchased quite cheaply. Take a look on Ebay. They are an excellent razor imo. If you want new, the Edwin Jagger range is well liked but I don't really like the EJ87 which I have. I also have a Lord 3 piece razor which is very similar to the Gillette Tech and I like it as well. They can be bought brand new for a few pounds. Boots sell their own brand DE which comes with 5 blades for about £3.99. It seems cheap and tacky but actually gives a good shave. It was the first DE I used and I tend to take it on holidays as I don't care if I leave it behind somewhere. Despite the price and appearance, there is nothing wrong with the Boots DE. If you want to try out a safety razor without spending a lot of money, this is a good place to start. Merkur are also highly regarded but I have never used one. I think you'll find razors are a bit like bikes, you will always want another one.

With regards to blades, I have tried, three different types of Wilkinson Swords, Derby, Bic Platinum, Lord and the Tesco/Boots own brand (the very same imo but Tescos are cheaper)  and I actually prefer the Tesco blade.

Beginners need to remember that these are different from the likes of the Fusion in that it requires a technique to use one without causing damage. Don't apply pressure, just hold the razor lightly and try and maintain ~30 degree angle between the blade and your face. Take your time to begine with and you will quickly get the hang of it. I repeat, do not press the razor into your face.

Was it 'The Big House' Norm?

Quite the opposite, though. The house was so small that it had no storage tank and therefore needed one of those nasty gas heaters which pretends to heat water straight from the mains.

Cold water, colder the better. A nice shaving brush to build up a foam lather and a leather belt to sharpen the cut throat razor. This does my gf fine. I use simple disposables ;) .
Ruddy heck, Crankster, I've got coffee on my keyboard now.

I've got three Merkurs - Futur (my first DE), 23c and an HD Classic 34c. Cracking razors - load them up with a Feather & the job's a good 'un.

Futur below, then a few more from my collection....

Wet shave using a Merkur 38c, badger brush and Bodyshop shaving soap every day, followed by Old Spice aftershave. It's a brilliant way to start your day.

While experimenting with safety razors I made the mistake of buying a cheap Weichi razor from China. It removed a substantial amount of my face along with the stubble. The Merkur is pure class - I can't recommend it highly enough.

How do you find the Rolls? I wouldn't mind trying one of these myself. I like the idea of an everlasting blade in a package which isn't as scary as a straight.

eBay - there are always plenty of them kicking around there for peanuts. I had to have mine honed by a fellow member of a shaving forum as it was pretty blunt, and no amount of honing & stropping using the Rolls' own system worked.

Straights really aren't that scary once you've used them a few times - I'm cack-handed and I still have a face left.

Oooh, feel how smooth my face is. Actually it got a high wifely approval so don't bother - that's good enough for me.
Back from work on the ship complete with a week old growth. The mach3 was getting a bit blunt and didn't see much point in buying more as I had a 34c waiting at home.
Good lather, I've been using soap bowl/brush for long time but have given Proraso cream a try - I like.
Apply the blade to face. (used the merkur blade that came with razor)

I now feel like a REAL man!

And cheers for the blades 3BM

Wet shaved at first, then was convinced by an ex to go electric. Didn't like it and wasted £50 of her money which may explain the ex bit. I've been back to wet with brush and solid soap ever since.

When I was a lad they got sewn into the inside of jacket lapels before a night out at the Ilford Palais to deter bouncers Looking back on it with the wisdom of age,not so clever really...

Has anyone tried the new Wilkinson Sword Hydro? £2.99 introductory offer in Superdrug. Not a bad effort at all imo, better than any of the modern day Gillett products, but I prefer single blades these days, and the price of cartridges are ridiculous. I won't be buying anymore when my sample pack is finished.
