Hello,
I'm new here, so not quite sure where to post my query; apologies if it would be better elsewhere on the forum
.
I'm wondering whether anyone has worked out a similar formula to the one posted above by Mickie on this thread, but designed for calculating the value of classic/vintage bikes instead of modern ones?
Deducting 10% from the original purchase price for each year since 1988 doesn't work out very well in this case!
Three local bike shops (in the Hampshire/Surrey/Sussex area) gave me a valuation a couple of years ago for a classic Colnago Super all suggesting around the £1,500 mark, but I have had no luck on
Ebay. However, having read the advice on this thread, that could be because it was up for auction, which I now gather is not recommended by regulars on here.
I tried Gumtree with no luck. On Facebook I had a couple of interested people. The first one pulled out because, although he was desperately keen, it was a choice of the bike or paying for his child's university accommodation and his wife made him see sense!
The other person was a very dodgy Bulgarian called Angel (real name Boris) who made no enquiries about the bike, but wanted my bank details, full name, sort code, home address etc, so he could pay me 'right now' by BACS without even seeing what he was buying, and said he would then send his cousin from London to collect the bike. Needless to say I did not proceed with that one.
I'm guessing perhaps the guys in the three bike shops I visited, who were all into classic bikes themselves, but didn't buy or sell them, coincidentally all over-valued mine which is why it hasn't sold. But on the other hand, perhaps I just need to be more patient! Any advice on how to work out a fair value on a classic bike would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
